Round 6: vs North Hobart
Venue: KGV
Conditions: Fine
The round six game against North Hobart saw the return of Jaye Bowden, Dave Hunt Simon Spencer Aaron Cornelius and Aaron Joseph. The team was looking forward to the challenge of taking on North Hobart who were yet to be defeated. They have recruited well and playing against strong opposition on a weekly basis is critical for not only each teams development but also for the development of the competition. There was a great crowd at the game and we were blessed with fantastic weather.
We again started very well and played to our game plan. We applied pressure to their midfield and supplied our forwards with scoring opportunities. Corbett, Smith and Street were again prominent players through the midfield. Hunt and Cornelius provided strong targets in the forward line and Glenn and Fewkes were dangerous at ground level.
In the second term went played indirect football and consequently our number of forward entries decreased. This is always going to make a high scoring quarter less likely. Our defence were rebounding the ball extremely well and we were extremely happy with the form of Sam Cornish and Shane Moles. They are both young, strong, enthusiastic defenders who are improving with each senior game. With the assistance of experienced players Brad Curran, Dave Kamaric and Ben Careless the defence held sway all game. They provided great run and were accountable for their direct opponents.
In the second half we lifted our work rate and were rewarded for our efforts and ran away with a convincing win. It is however important to put the win in context and not get ahead of ourselves. North Hobart had several key players out injured and will be better for their return. And there is still room for improvement in our game. There needs to be further development both from an individual and team aspect. The next three weeks should be great competition as we will be challenged by Brighton, who are a much improved team, then take on Clarence at Bellerive and New Norfolk at KGV. This will be a good indicator of our improvement so far this season.
The pleasing aspect from the weekend's result was the fact that every player contributed throughout the game. It would be difficult to individualise players as it was a good team result.
