Round 7: vs Brighton
Venue: Pontville
Conditions: Fine and Windy

In an extremely disappointing performance at Pontville on Saturday we were lucky to manage a 1 point win against Brighton. There is always an element of uncertainty about how the team will perform coming off a very good win the previous week. The team was obviously buoyant and confident having accounted for North Hobart. However, we failed in certain aspects of our preparation as Brighton has improved and we did not approach the game with the same intensity as previous weeks. We lacked genuine commitment and purpose in our football with too many players not performing consistently for four quarters. This was disappointing because it was spoken about as a test before the game.

We started positively kicking four goals to one with a strong breeze at our backs. Glenn and Fewkes continued their good form at ground level. In an unfortunate incident in the first quarter Nathan Mathews was concussed and took no further part in the game. Nathan was playing well and his run and delivery was missed.

In the second term we were unable to penetrate Brighton's strong defence. They were more desperate for the ball and out worked us kicking 4 goals to 1. They were confident at half time going into the break only point behind. We did not lift our intensity at all in the third quarter and only kicked 1 goal 2 behinds. This was extremely disappointing considering our third quarters have generally been our strongest and we were kicking to the scoring end of the ground. The final quarter proved to be a nail biter, Smith playing behind the ball proved valuable as he helped our defence repel Brighton's repetitive attacks. Damian McIver proved our saviour as he contested a mark in the goal square only seconds before the final siren. There was sense of relief when the siren went as it was a win we didn't really deserve.

The one positive from the game was the fact that we did play so poorly and still managed to win the game. We were obviously disappointed in our efforts and will look to have a greatly improved performance against our arch rivals Clarence at Bellerive this weekend as we play for the Linton Bingley Cup.
