Round 9: vs New Norfolk
Venue: KGV
Conditions: Fine
Saturday was a good result for the entire club as we achieved success in all three grades. The under 19's continued their impressive form with a convincing win. There is an abundance of talent within the under 19 and 17 group and the likes of McCauley, Harwood, Hills, Cox, Carlton, Santi and Breward, who will be playing senior football in the next couple of seasons. The reserves won a tight contest, which was a great result for Ben and the players. The reserves displayed great spirit by fighting back in the last quarter and winning by 19 points.
We were disappointed with our result against Clarence. However, we did play a good last quarter against them and we carried this into our training and displayed it against New Norfolk on Saturday. The game started as planned as we got away to a solid start. Our midfield was extremely impressive with their hard running and precise use of the ball when moving forward. We skipped away to a four goal lead at the first change.
In the second term we took full advantage of our midfield dominance and kicked six goals to two. Our forwards were working well together taking strong marks and kicking goals. Hunt and Spencer were prominent in this term and with Piuselli, Smith, O'Garey and Corbett finding plenty of the ball we controlled the quarter. Our defenders provided us with great drive and rebound. Moles, Armstrong, Kamaric, Curran, Sweeney and Cornish were very good all day.
We took a 51 point lead into the third term. New Norfolk played well in the second half and we were unable to extend our lead greatly. The eventual result was 63 points, which was a good result considering we were coming off a loss and New Norfolk had been impressive in recent weeks. Our work rate for the entire game was fantastic and we continually applied pressure to the New Norfolk players. Several players had good games and it is hard to single out individual players. However, Dave Hunt's return to form was timely as he provided us with a major focal point. Piuselli was once again very good and Moles, Kamaric and Curran can be pleased with their game.
On another note we have had some unfortunate news regarding Daniel Fewkes. Dan suffered a heavy knock against Brighton three weeks ago. He played last week against Clarence, however, on Saturday morning Dan wasn't feeling well and when taken to hospital he was found to have a blot clot in his kidney. Dan is currently still in hospital and has been advised that he will be unable to play again this season. This is a major loss as Dan was playing very well and developing into an impressive link player. His attack on the ball and pressure he applied to the opposition will be sorely missed. He has a great future ahead of him and we wish him a speedy recovery.
This weekend is the SFL representative and State game. It is good timing and we are placed in a good position at the half way mark of the season.
Final Score
Glenorchy 20-13-133
New Norfolk 10-10-70
Better players: Piuselli, Corbett, Bowden, Armstrong, Hunt, Kamaric, Moles,
Enjoy the long weekend and see you next week at Lauderdale. This promises to be a good game as Lauderdale have had some impressive wins this season. They are a young team with a lot of spirit and their recruits are performing well.
