Round 15: vs Clarence
Venue: KGV
Conditions: Fine/Shower
Clarence had totally outclassed us on our two previous occasions this year with the results unacceptable. The playing group was keen to rebound and win, lose or draw was determined to play a solid brand of attacking football. Having the previous week off due to the split round gave players a handy break and enabled injuries to heal. We trained hard during this period and prepared for a physical encounter.
Richard Robinson, whose form in the reserves had been very good, got recalled into the senior team, Matt Smith returned form injury and Aaron Cornelius was available. Sam Cornish was available due to injury and Jake Cox unfortunately could not hold his position in the team despite some impressive performances. We are now finding ourselves in a stronger position with several key players returning from injury. This requires players to perform each week to retain their positions in the senior team.
The senior team played extremely well and accounted for Clarence by the tune of 36 points. To have held Clarence, who have an extremely potent forward line to 2 goals, 5 behinds to three quarter time was a good effort. We unfortunately dropped our work ethic in the last quarter and enabled Clarence to kick 6 goals.
Although disappointed in the last quarter result we are extremely proud of the way the guys approached the game and applied themselves to the task at hand. Several players performed well throughout the game lead by Ben Sweeney who did a good job on ball and in defence. His hard in and under work was great in smothering their onballer's effectiveness. Blair Kean had a good game both on his wing and in the forward line. James Armstrong proved to be valuable as a forward and in defence and Aaron Joseph provided good run all day.
Coming away with a good win was a pleasing result but it is only a small step and we know Clarence are an extremely proud team and will lift when finals arrive. They were depleted with injuries by the end of the game and showed what they can do in the last quarter by kicking several goals.
