Last week AFL Tasmania announced it’s latest inductees into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame for 2009 with 3 Glenorchy people being inducted with the late great Bob Beakley into the Administrator category at no.220, Jim Manson at no.221 for overall contribution and Michael Hunnibell as a player at no.225 who spent sometime with us in the late 80’s, early ‘90s.
This is a tremedous effort by all 3 to be recognised on the night the “CLUB” is being inducted as the next greatest club of all time.
BOB BEAKLEY
Bob served football in the Glenorchy district continously from 1965 onwards. His 18 years service on the senior committee was complemented by continous service to junior football in Hobart’s northern suburbs throughout his career as a football administrator. Bob Beakley was recognised throughout school and club competitions as a leader and instrumental in structural changes that benefited young players from throughout greater Hobart. He is a Life Member of the Glenorchy Football Club and the TFL and also a member of the Club’s Hall of Fame. He has been recognised by all levels of government and the AFL for his voluntary contributionb to the game.
JIM MANSON
Gentleman Jim Manson enjoyed a highly successful playing career with Glenorchy from 1957 to 1968. He was considered one of the fairest players to pull on the boots in a tough era of the game. He played 210 games for Glenorchy and represented the TFL. After his playing career came to an end he became a force in the local media (newspaper and tv). Jim Manson’s 25 years in the media made him one of the most recognisable names in football up until the early 1990’s.
MICHAEL HUNNIBELL
Better known as “Muncha” enjoyed a long career in the TFL and still holds the record for the number of games played for Tasmania. Michael started his career with New Norfolk and finished his career with Glenorchy after joining the Magpies in 1989 under coach Billy Picken. Here are some of his achievements –
Played in New Norfolk’s Premiership Team of 1982, New Norfolk B&F Winner 1977 & 1986, Coached New Norfolk 1987-1988, Captained New Norfolk 1986 & 1988, Lefroy Medalist for best Tasmanian player 1983, Played 262 Senior games and represented Tasmania 27 times
